I traveled to Nicaragua in January 2009, at the request of Andy and Gricelie, my friends who live in Belize. They wanted me to meet Andy's parents who live in a small village north of Managua. As much as I wanted to go, I nearly canceled the trip because I was suffering terribly from Plantar Fasciitis in my right foot. It was so bad I was in constant pain and limping. But I wanted to see my friends and meet Andy's family, so I went anyway. I'm so glad I did. It was a trip that changed my life. What I discovered can change yours, too.
The first day at Andy's family home, his father Andrés noticed my limp. Through Andy's translations – his father speaks only Spanish – Andrés said he could help me relieve the pain in my foot. I was skeptical. After all, I had spent hundreds of dollars on custom insoles, expensive shoes and doctor appointments with no relief. But I was in such agony, I agreed to let him help me. I would do anything to make the pain go away and walk comfortably again.
Father's devotion takes away daughter's pain
Andy's sister Maria, also visiting her parents at the time, sensed my desperation, and told me her story, again translated by Andy:
“I had severe heel pain for more than a year when I finally went to see a doctor. He first gave me insoles to try, but they brought no relief, so he began giving me shots for the pain. On a visit home, my father studied the insoles supplied by my doctor and saw right away that they didn’t support my heel correctly. So he made a pair of insoles for me in his shop. I was walking without pain within two hours."
Did I mention Andrés is a shoemaker? This is how a trip to Nicaragua changed my life – and what I discovered can change yours, too.
